“Europe has the duty of protecting Refugees who try to escape prosecution and conflict”, she said. But the Portuguese minister for Internal Affairs also pointed out to the fact that, in many areas where migrants establish, there is a lack of infrastructures and resources, such as water or healthcare.
“Nothing will stop people who escape to fight for their lives”, she insisted. “Europe has to manage these flows in a responsible manner.”
Michael Newman from CRASH (Médecins Sans Frontières), criticized what he called the “fortress of the Balkans”.
Newman also said civil society and NGOs are paying a high price when it comes to help refugees. He accused the EU of having externalized the issue and having sent the weight of responsabilities to countries like Libya and Sudan.
The executive director of the European Asylum Support Office, the Portuguese José Carreira, mentioned the importance of his agency when dealing with the crisis.
Finally, Lord David Hannay criticized Nigel Farage’s intervention, one day earlier. The British MP said Migration was used as an argument for Brexit and rejected the construction of walls who “are the same thing that burry your head in the sand”.
